Beyond the Noise: Genesis and Why We Built Zen Nivesh
What are our core values and what inspires us!
In my last post, I shared with you a few glimpses of where we, Shivam, Harshal, & I, come from.
Today, I am going to pen some thoughts on how we founded Zen Nivesh. What inspired us, and what are our core values?
Zen Nivesh. If you break this organically, there are two words. Zen and Nivesh.
Zen means mindfulness.
Nivesh means invest.
So, if you add them, it means mindful investing.
What does mindful investing mean?
It means being aware of the internal and external environment before taking any investment action.
Let’s start with the internal environment first.
If you are, by default, an impatient individual, equity investing is not for you.
If you panic due to uncertainty and volatility, equity investing is not for you.
If you keep comparing yourself with others, equity investing is not for you.
Another aspect of mindfulness(Zen) is calm. That’s one of the most essential traits of becoming a successful investor. Hence, aligning your internal thoughts and personality with the long-term nature of investing is not a choice but a necessity.
When it comes to the external environment, staying away from strong influences should be the primary goal. With the proliferation of the internet and social media, the noise-to-signal ratio is hitting the roof consistently. In such a scenario, if you get affected by an influencer and give in to either FOMO or panic, you lose it all.
Now that I have given you some glimpse of what mindful investing (The Zen Nivesh way) is, I would like to share a very useful interaction I had with a couple of prospects.
Two gentlemen came to us and shared their grievances in general:
“If the recommended stocks do not perform for a quarter or so, the advisor replaces them with a new one, always saying that the new idea is a better one.”
“The advisor will write detailed blogs to share his knowledge about investing, but will not share any research or notes with his paid subscribers; he will just share his trades.”
“Stocks that everyone knows about get recommended the most. There is a dearth of original ideas.”
“Queries and feedback are seldom encouraged. Don’t we deserve some respect?”
We, Shivam, Harshal, & I, carefully made a note of their grievances. The point on a dearth of original investible ideas was something that hit us hard. We knew instantly that we could not do what everybody else was doing. We had to do something more. So, we did some more market surveys and realized that nobody was covering the less than 3000 cr market cap universe. And voila. We found our niche from which to begin. Be it in our advisory ( Stock Research and Model Portfolios) or research education, this will be our focus area.
We did not stop there. We identified the Dos and the Don’ts
We just made two promises to the above prospects:
Whenever you have a query, you can reach out to any 1 of us, and we will resolve it in a day or 2, max. (A reasonable time to resolve your queries and feedback)
Whenever we recommend a stock to our subscribers, at least one of us would be invested in it. (Skin in the Game)
We also reminded them what we won’t promise.
We won’t promise stock performance or portfolio performance
We won’t promise multibaggers
They both were satisfied and told us:
“We would be happy to explore your work. When you launch your service, please let us know.”
That’s mindful investing for you. Zen Nivesh
The legendary investor and fund manager, the Late Mr. Parag Parikh, said this more than a decade ago.
“What is my job? It is to create HNIs, not to chase them.”
This is our north star.
This is the inspiration that drives our actions and strategies at Zen Nivesh.
That’s it for now. In my next post, I will cover a little bit about our research methodology.
